Words of wisdom from people in the Early Childhood
Field...
"Parents don`t make mistakes because they don`t care, but
because they care so deeply."
T. Berry Brazelton
"When we
strengthen families, we ultimately strengthen the community. Our goal is that
parents everywhere work with supportive providers, feel confident in their
parenting role, and form strong, resilient attachments with their children. To
help achieve this, providers must be responsive to parents, knowledgeable about
child development, and eager to see every parent succeed."
T. Berry Brazelton
“Attachment to a baby is a
long-term process, not a single, magical moment. The opportunity for bonding at
birth may be compared to falling in love—staying in love takes longer and
demands more work.”
T. Berry Brazelton
“Finally, learning occurs
within the context of social relationships with other members of the community
who have similar, if not identical, issues and concerns from the realm of
practice.”
Virgina Buysse
“When I think of the word passion and the meaning
to the word passion, what comes to mind are what are my values, what are my
beliefs, what are the ideas that lead me to action, what do I do so naturally
that perhaps seems natural to me but may be challenging to others? What's in my
heart?”
Leticia Lara
“Passion to fix all injustices in the world through teaching”
Louise Derman Sparks
”We have the unique opportunity of working with young
children, to shape a child`s life for the better.”
Sandy Escobido
“Education opens up worlds, gives you tools to ask questions
and investigate”
Renatta M. Cooper
Ana- I really relate to the quote from Sandy Escobido. It is such a true statement. We are ECE truly are the ones that shape a child for the rest of their life! It is so overwhelming to think of that sometimes. If we do not create a place where children are safe, nurtured, and encouraged to be learners, then they may not be successful in the future. It always frustrates me when there is talk about paying high school teachers that teach advanced placment classes more because they are teaching such hard courses. I think the teachers of young children should be paid the most because we are helping to mold and shape a child for the rest of their lives. Without us making a positive impression on these students, there would be no AP classes in high school. I know that is a little dramatic, but it is true!
ReplyDeleteHi, Ana. This is such a wonderful collection of quotes. I especially connected with the quote that compares the attachment process to falling in love. I think that this is so true from the parent's point of view as well. So many young parents experience that magical moment only to be overwhelmed by the work involved in maintaining their relationship with that magical bundle. Much like choosing to become a teacher, becoming a parent is not a decision to be made lightly, it is a lifetime commitment that requires hard work, dedication and the ability to love unconditionally. I agree with Brazelton that this attachment is a long-term process - one that must continuously be tended and nourished.
ReplyDeleteThose are some great quotes you found Ana. I love the one about forming an attachment with babies. Although I am not a mother, I know what it is like to bond with a baby. It's so true that it doesn't happen immediately, especially if the baby is a bit older. Establishing a relationship and developing it takes work, but it's definitely worth it!
